Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) was formed on the 1st April 1974 from South East Lancashire and North East Cheshire Passenger Transport Executive (SELNEC), when the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester was created. In preparation for bus deregulation in October 1986, GMPTE bus operations passed to Greater Manchester Buses Limited, which was later split on 31 December 1993 into GM Buses North and GM Buses South, these later passing to Stagecoach and First Group respectively.
